In this project, I explore themes of escapism, hybridity, and transformation picked up from RuPaul’s Drag Race­ — through analogue processes. My response to this brief was using four main materials- Terracotta clay, oil, water, and paint.

I hand-moulded each of my letters from terracotta clay, keeping the

cracks and imperfections to reflect fragility, malleability, and the beauty

of becoming. I felt like this mirrored the performative act of drag: identities created and shaped with resilience. The background combines oil, paint, and water to create vibrant patterns, symbolising hybridity and fluidity. These materials are intentionally placed together— because clay requires water to be shaped, and oil to create sheen, enhance color, and durability.

My quote: “we’re all born naked” in left in raw clay, and then “the rest is drag” appears in cyan, one of the recurring colour Drag Queens use— referencing the show’s visual language.
